Dear Little Children
We thank God for your friendship and support. If you have visited us at some point, you have probably noticed the well-used playground set near the k-house. Behind the slides and swings is a walnut grove. Maybe you have even feasted there beneath bare limbs on a Thanksgiving afternoon. Several weddings have been consecrated in that quiet space. The trees are verdant now – a stained glass canopy of green, where squirrels already caper. The last wedding (of our very own Brenda and Jason!) left behind a wooden cross ornamented with flowers. The flowers have faded, but the cross still stands. At its foot is a small glade of mowed grass, a little nest among the taller greenery.
Once a week we spread out quilts there and the little children gather. We sing songs and tell stories. Sometimes it is just a couple of families and neighbors. Last week, the space was full with our new summer volunteer family and new guests in the hospitality program, each with kids of all different ages! It’s not hard to imagine that Jesus is there with us. Would he giggle with us through “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”? Or bear cheerfully along with us as we try to catch new lyrics in different languages? Or try to calm the ever moving sea that is a body of children? I think he would. I think he does. Where do you see the kingdom of God at work in and around your life?
