Another New Arrival
Recently, we welcomed a family of 4 from Congo who have been in the U.S. for a year and are in need of housing as they continue waiting for their work authorization. It has been a joy getting to know this family as they settle in here at Jubilee. We also welcomed a work group from Caneyville, a Mennonite community in Kentucky, who brought tremendous energy and skills to move the work forward on the new 2-bedroom housing unit that we have been building.
At the end of February, several people from Jubilee traveled to Stewart Detention Center to visit immigrant detainees there, to listen and to bring words of empathy and friendship. The trip was arranged through El Refugio, a house of hospitality for people visiting their loved ones detained at Stewart. Though the people in the detention center did not know the Jubilee visitors, they were willing to share a part of their story, to chat or to share jokes, sometimes to pray and even to sing together across the phone and the plexiglass. We remember these people in our prayers — as well as all the 70,000 people in detention centers across the country, and their families and loved ones.
